Business Regulation

Running a business should be about making money but the regulatory burden forced upon us by the state is a full time job in itself. This is just an overhead that we all have to try to live with. If we can get someone in the business to do it for free, e.g. a wife or partner then this is the best way to do it. Remember with almost all government impositions if you don't do it correctly or on time you get fined.

I can do it for you or be there to help you with it.

Here are just a few things to think about:

Payroll: Lots and lots of things to think about, sick pay, holiday pay, student loans, working family tax credits etc, and if you make mistakes your employees soon tell you. Even as an expert it can be difficult to keep up with it all and I still make mistakes from time to time. I recommend that you do payroll online with www.payroo.com it's free and easy to use.

VAT returns: Get it wrong and the investigations and fines can be very stressful.

Annual returns for companies: Late filing is now a criminal offence and carries heavy penalties.

Employing people: contracts of employment, disciplinary procedures, industrial tribunals....

DATA Protection Act: Should I be registered?

Keeping books and records: Do I buy and accounts package? Use a spreadsheet? Get someone else to do it?

Health and Safety: I can't make a sensible comment on this area of madness.

Environmental Health: Can the staff wash their hands after using the toilet? Is the washbasin within easy access of the toilet? One client had to put in a new sink because the old one was 8 feet from the toilet.

Industry specific legislation: e.g. food labelling regulations.
